New Mineral Gallery III
TRI-COLORED SPODUMENE, Nuristan, Laghman Province, Afghanistan. A most unusual, doubly-terminated, loose crystal of large, important size that is transparent and begins at one termination in green (hiddenite) color, graduates to pink (kunzite) for a short distance and then turns to yellow (triphane.) In the photo the green looks blue. Measures 5x1-1/2x1-3/8 inches. Price is $1,500.
BLUE TOPAZ, Virgem da Lapa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. A choice, very-well terminated, loose crystal with fine medium-blue color. For those who care about such things, it weighs 280 grams. It is complete and damage-free. It stands on a custom-made base by Alec Madoff, mount maker to the American Museum of Natural History. Measures 2x2-1/2x2 inches. Price is $2,500.
DIOPTASE in and on CALCITE, Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia. Superb oriented minute dioptase crystals are on and in sharp crystals of calcite. This particular habit of these two minerals together came from the mine for a very short period in the 1970s and this is the nicest I have had. Measures 5-1/2x3-1/4x2-1/2 inches. Price is $10,000.
RHODOCHROSITE, Margarita Mine, Morococha Mining District, Junin Department, Peru. A superb group of very sharp, individualized crystals. This is an exceptional specimen and its modulation and relief are lovely. Measures 3-3/4x3-1/4x1-1/2 inches. Price is $2,000.
TOPAZ and SMOKY QUARTZ, Alabaschka, near Mursinka, Ural Mountains, Russia. An important, old-time Russian classic that I sold years ago and recently repurchased. It consists of a large mass of terminated, bluish topaz crystals to 1-1/4 inches with several smoky quartz crystals intergrown with the topaz. This type of specimen only rarely comes to the marketplace. Measures 5-1/2x3x2 inches. Price is $15,000.
NATIVE SULFUR, Girgenti (Agrigento), Sicily, Italy. A genuine example of native sulfur crystals on matrix. A former Vassar College collection specimen. There has been much written and said about the modern, laboratory grown sulfur specimens, but this one with its pre 1959 provenance is a genuine one. I show the front and back of the label of the late Dr. Eugene E. Sensel. Measures 4-3/4x3x2 inches with the largest individual sulfur crystal at 1-1/4 inches. Please note one cleaved sulfur crystal at center-left. Price is $1,000.
EPIDOTE, Kharmony Valley near Khapalu west of Skardu, Pakistan. A superb example of the famed “fishbone” habit of epidote crystals on matrix with byssolite. Measures 4x1-1/2x3/4 inches. Price $1,500.
BROCHANTITE, Congo, Shaba, Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of Congo. Simply put, this is the most spectacular Congo brochantite specimen that I have ever seen. The radiating crystals, particularly brilliant at their ends are in flat, round masses on rock to 2 inches across. This beautiful, museum specimen is of large, important size and measures 10x4x3-3/4 inches. Price is $2,500.
